Middle Colonies' Economy

The Middle Colonies were considered the commercial center of the North American Colonies. They had an extremely large grain export and their growing season was much longer because of the hot climate. Their nickname was even the "bread basket" of the English Colonies. Their fertile soil was good for cash crops and mass harvesting, and the keeping of livestock. Colonists also grew crops such as wheat, corn, and potatoes. Factories in the Middle Colonies produced many goods including iron, paper, and textiles. Forrests were abundant in the Middle Colonies, which gave them a great lumber recourse for ship building. These colonies also did trading in Europe for manufactured goods. Trade was possible within the colonies because of rivers that were used to carry furs and farmed goods around North America.
